What to eat (or drink) after my workout?

One of the most common questions trainers are asked is what to have post workout.

There are a few options.

1. Whey protein. After a killer workout your body tends to break down muscle for energy. A protein powder is a quick and easy way to replenish and feed the muscles. Whey also produces an insulin spike, which encourages muscles to absorb glucose and replenish energy stores. Research shows that people who supplement with whey burn nearly twice as much body fat as those who don't. You can drink this mixed in water, almond mil, or even a fruit smoothie.

2. Eggs...yep, eggs. Rich in protein and amino acids. For a lot of the same reasons you want whey protein powder, eggs would be another good post workout choice. They will help reduce muscle damage, not to mention they are rich in vitamin D and omega-3 fatty acids.

3. Sweet potatoes! You're welcome! According to nutritionist Dallas Hartwig, protein alone doesn't cut it! You need plant based carbohydrates to replenish muscle glycogen. 


4. Avocado! The good kind of fat! An ideal recovery meal should include it! This is good for healing the joints and muscles. In addition, healthy fats are crucial for absorbing vitamins A and E.


In our opinion, a whey protein drink right after your workout is ideal. It should hold you over until your next meal, which you should consume within the hour after your workout. Eggs and avocado maybe on some whole grain toast and a half a sweet potato...that sounds heavenly!
